How To Specify Outdoor Motif Lights Without Getting Burned
The six decisions that determine whether a motif light order arrives usable: shape approval, bulb spacing, frame finish, fixing method, ingress protection and lead time.
Start With The Fixing Not The Shape
Almost every motif light problem starts with a shape chosen before anyone looked at what it has to hang from. Existing cross-street brackets and catenaries set a weight limit and a fixing pattern, and a frame drawn without them either will not attach or overloads the bracket. Photograph the bracket, measure it, and send that with the design brief. A factory that asks for it first is a factory that has installed before.
Bulb Spacing Is The Single Biggest Visual Decision
Spacing is usually offered at 5, 7 or 10 cm. At 5 cm the lit outline reads as a continuous line, which is what you need for lettering, script and thin detail. At 10 cm you see individual points of light, which is fine on a large simple shape seen from across a carriageway and noticeably cheaper. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a delivered motif looks nothing like the render.
The Frame Finish Decides Whether It Survives Year Two
A motif frame is iron or aluminium rod. What protects it is the finish: a stoving varnish in gold or white, applied for rust prevention. Bare or thinly painted frames come back from a wet season with rust bleeding through the wrap. Ask specifically what the frame finish is, and ask to see the unlit sample photograph.
Daylight Appearance Is Half The Job
A street display is up for weeks and lit for a few hours a day. The rest of the time it is a sculpture in daylight. This is why the surface material matters: PVC tinsel and mesh, with or without sparkle dust, are what make a frame read as a finished object rather than as wire. Always ask for the sample photographed unlit as well as lit.

Match The Ingress And Temperature Rating To The Market
IP65 is the working standard for outdoor motif lighting. Just as important is the temperature range: wiring rated -40 C to 60 C covers both a Russian winter and a Gulf summer, which means one specification can serve several markets. If a supplier cannot state the range, they have not tested it.
Work Backwards From The Switch On Date
Standard catalogue items ship in 7 to 9 days. Custom shapes run 20 to 30 days in production, and that clock only starts after the sample is approved. Add sea freight and customs. A December switch-on that starts as a drawing in October is already late; late summer is the comfortable point to begin.
