Tunnel size before anything else

Measure your largest item, add clearance, and start there. Tunnels in this range run from 500 x 300 mm for mail and parcels, through 655 x 505 mm and 805 x 655 mm for baggage, to 1005 x 1005 mm and 1510 x 1810 mm for cargo and pallets. Buying a larger tunnel than you need costs money and floor space; buying a smaller one means items get turned away, which is worse.

Penetration is set by tube voltage

Steel penetration across this range runs from 6 mm on the Viboo5030A, through 8 mm at 80 kV, 24 to 34 mm at 100 to 140 kV, up to 43 to 46 mm at 160 kV and 58 mm at 260 kV. The pattern is consistent: higher voltage, more penetration. The VKX 5030C is the useful exception to remember, reaching 38 mm in a compact 506 x 300 mm tunnel because it runs 140 kV rather than 80 kV.

Resolution figures and what AWG means

Wire resolution is quoted in AWG, where a higher number means a thinner wire and therefore better resolution. Most scanners here state 38 AWG or 40 AWG, which corresponds to 0.0787 mm of copper wire. Penetration resolution, typically 32 to 34 AWG, is the thinnest wire visible behind a steel plate, and it is the harder test. Spatial resolution, usually 1.0 mm, describes the smallest feature resolvable.

Typical versus guaranteed

The VKX 6040 is unusually honest about this and worth using as a reference. It publishes 38 mm penetration typical against 34 mm guaranteed, and AWG40 typical against AWG38 guaranteed. Typical is what the machine normally does; guaranteed is what it is warranted to do. For a contract or a tender, quote the guaranteed figure. Suppliers who publish only typical figures are quoting the better number.

Dose, leakage and film safety

Ask for the measurement distance, not just the number. Leakage figures in this range are stated at 5 cm or 10 cm from the housing and vary accordingly. Several models reference GB15208.1-2018, and most guarantee film safety to the ASA/ISO1600 standard, which matters if photographic film passes through.

Duty cycle and operator tools

Sealed oil cooling with a 100% duty cycle means the scanner runs the full shift without resting, which is not universal. Then look at the operator side: high density alerting for regions the image cannot penetrate, explosive and drug auxiliary detection, and Threat Image Projection if you have to evidence screener competence.
