The standard industrial compression spring: a plain helical coil in zinc plated steel. It is the default specification for machinery, and most other springs in this category are variations on it made for a particular constraint.
Zinc plating on carbon or 65Mn spring steel gives adequate protection for indoor industrial use at the lowest cost.
Wire from 0.1 to 8 mm, so the same specification covers a small return spring and a heavy machine spring.
Coloured zinc allows springs of different rates to be distinguished on the assembly line.
Store plated springs dry and avoid leaving them in contact with damp packaging. Zinc protects steel sacrificially, and it works fastest exactly where moisture is trapped.
