A small carbon steel compression spring with both ends ground and a black coating. Grinding on both sides is what lets a short spring sit flat under load instead of tilting, which matters far more on a small spring than on a long one.
Right and left hand grinding gives a flat bearing face at each end so the load stays on the spring's own axis.
Short springs tilt most readily. Ground ends are the difference between a spring that seats and one that wears its bore.
Keeps the spring unobtrusive where it is visible and gives more protection than a bare carbon steel surface.
Seat the spring against a flat, clean face. Debris under a ground end defeats the purpose of grinding it in the first place.
Short springs cocking sideways under load and scoring the bore they sit in
Bare carbon steel springs corroding in ordinary workshop humidity
Dimensional and load figures are set per order against your drawing or sample, so they are marked TBC rather than filled with catalogue numbers.

Against an unground closed-end spring of identical geometry, this part costs a little more and stays square under load. In a pocket or over a guide rod, unground ends are acceptable.

If it seats against a flat face, yes. Unground ends make contact over about three quarters of a coil, which tilts a short spring noticeably.
It reduces it slightly, which is accounted for in the design. Specify the finished free length you need and we will allow for the grind.
Yes, and the same grinding applies. Stainless would be the choice for wet or washdown positions.
Send your drawing, dimensions or a sample. We will confirm the specification and come back with a price and a lead time.
