What the two digits mean

The first digit is solid ingress and the second is liquid ingress. A 6 in the first position means dust tight. A 7 in the second means immersion to one metre for thirty minutes. An 8 means immersion beyond one metre under conditions the manufacturer specifies.

Which models carry which rating

Where swimming actually appears

Two listings go further than the rating alone. The 1.85 inch calling watch is IP67 and its specification states pool swimming is supported. The screenless tracker and the 1.1 inch thermometer tracker are IP68 and described as swim proof. A rating alone is not a swimming claim; the manufacturer statement is.

What no IP rating covers

Hot water and steam, because heat changes seal behaviour and pressure. Salt water corrosion, which attacks contacts rather than seals. High pressure jets. Chemical exposure. Diving at any depth.

Where a rating is missing
