Packaging guide

Board, wrap and weight: how a gift box is actually specified

Most specification arguments with a packaging supplier come from describing a box in adjectives instead of components.

Name the three layers

A wrapped rigid box is a board carcass, a covering material and an interior. Quote requests that name all three come back accurately; quote requests that say "sturdy box with a nice finish" come back as a guess. Board thickness controls rigidity, covering controls appearance and print behaviour, interior controls presentation and protection.

Coated versus uncoated covering

A coated paper holds a printed band or a fine stripe crisply — the zebra-band boxes in this range use a coated wrap for that reason. Uncoated and textured papers absorb ink and soften fine print, but they take a blind emboss beautifully and feel better in the hand. Pick according to whether the decoration is printed or pressed.

Where foil and emboss need a plain field

Hot foil and blind emboss want an undecorated surface. That is why plain matte ranges exist alongside decorated ones — a foil logo on a printed field fights the print. If you brand your own boxes, buy the plain version and put your mark on it.

What to send with an enquiry

The piece or its dimensions, the box size if you already know it, a colour reference for the covering and the insert, artwork if printed, and your target unit cost. Those five things turn a two-week quote conversation into a two-day one.

Where this shows up in the catalogue

The guidance above is general. If you want to see it applied, the jewellery boxes family is where these decisions bite hardest in this range.

Apply it to your own product

Send the piece, the quantity and how it is sold, and we will come back with a construction and a price rather than a brochure.
