Turned Pin With Tapped Cross Hole
A short pin that locates in a bore and takes a screw sideways through its middle
Small, Simple And Very Easy To Get Wrong
This pin locates in a reamed hole and is retained by a screw that comes in from the side, through a tapped cross hole. The two things that matter are the location diameter and the position of that tapped hole relative to it; miss either and the assembly will not go together.
The original site lists this part in SUS304. It is a typical example of the small turned hardware Shipu has made for office automation and financial machine builders since 2009.

What Makes This Pin Worth Machining Properly
Location Diameter Held
The seat diameter is cut to your fit class so the pin does not need selecting on assembly.
Tapped Hole On Position
The cross hole is drilled and tapped from the turned datum, not from an eyeballed flat.
Clean Thread Start
The tap is started square, so the retaining screw runs in without picking up.
Application Scenarios
- Retained locating pins in machine frames
- Pivot pins in small linkages
- Adjustable stops on production fixtures
- Shafts for small rollers and idlers
Who It Is For
- Designers of small mechanisms with side-screw retention
- Buyers sourcing small turned hardware in stainless
- Production teams struggling with pins that need selecting
- Fixture builders needing repeatable locating pins
Small Part, Familiar Problems
- Pins that need hand selection because the diameter varies
- Tapped holes drilled off centre so the screw binds
- Thread damage from a tap started out of square
- Minimum order quantities that do not suit small hardware
One Setup
Turning, drilling and tapping without releasing the part.
Gauge Every Lot
The seat diameter and thread are checked on each batch.
Sensible Quantities
Small first orders are normal while a part is qualified.
Technical Features
- Location diameter turned to the drawing fit
- Tapped cross hole positioned from the turned datum
- Chamfered lead-in at the insertion end
- Relief between the location band and the body
- Edge breaks so the pin does not score its bore

Materials We Run
- SUS304 stainless, the grade named on the original listing
- SUS316L for wet environments
- Free-cutting steel, plated, for cost-driven applications
- Brass where the pin must not mark a soft mating part
Manufacturing Process
Turn Diameters
Location band, relief and body are cut from bar.
Drill Cross Hole
Driven tooling drills from the turned datum.
Tap
The hole is tapped in the same setup so the thread starts square.
Deburr
Both ends of the cross hole are deburred before packing.
Quality Control
- Location diameter measured on every lot
- Thread checked with a plug gauge
- Cross hole position verified on a profile projector
- Insertion trial into a customer-supplied gauge bore where available
- Under the ISO 9001 system certified in 2009
Customization Options
- Location diameter and fit class
- Overall length and head form
- Cross hole thread size and position
- Knurled or plain body
- Passivation or plating
Against Standard Dowels And Shoulder Screws
| Standard ground dowel pin | A dowel cannot be retained by a side screw; this pin can, at the cost of being a made part rather than a catalogue item. |
|---|---|
| Shoulder screw | Keeps the retention out of the load path and lets the pin be stainless throughout. |
| Pressed-in pin | Removable for service, where a press fit means scrapping the housing or the pin. |

Turned Pin With Tapped Cross Hole — FAQ
Which material do you supply these in?
SUS304 stainless is the grade recorded for this part on the original product listing, and it remains the default. SUS316L, plated free-cutting steel and brass are all available if your application needs them.
Can you hold a press fit on the location diameter?
Yes, if you state the mating bore and the fit class rather than a nominal size. Press fits are gauged on every lot because the band is narrow.
Will the tapped hole be clean of burrs inside?
Both break-outs are deburred as a routine step, and the check is part of the packing inspection. A burr inside the bore is what stops a pin entering, so it gets attention.
Do you supply small quantities?
Yes. Small hardware is frequently ordered in small first batches while a design is being proven. The unit price reflects the setup, and it drops on repeat orders because the program is archived.
Can you mark the part with a number?
Laser or stamp marking is possible depending on the available flat area. Send the marking content and position with the drawing.
