Syringe Filter

BioFil Syringe Filter

BioFil™ syringe filters are designed for high-particulate samples where standard filters clog quickly. The multi-layer membrane structure includes a PP or GF prefilter, extending filter life and reducing the risk of column blockage during routine sample preparation. Available in 4 mm, 13 mm, and 25 mm diameters with nine membrane types, the filter family supports aqueous, organic, and protein-containing matrices. Sealing is achieved via ultrasonic welding, which maintains low extractables and ensures integrity under pressure. The filters are supplied in 100-piece packs with part numbers and membrane type printed directly on the housing.

  • Multi-layer membrane with PP or GF prefilter extends life when filtering samples with high particulate loads
  • Ultrasonic welding sealing avoids adhesive residues, reducing extractables in sensitive HPLC and GC methods
  • Available in 4 mm, 13 mm, and 25 mm diameters to match sample volume and particle load requirements
  • Nine membrane types cover aqueous, organic, and protein-based samples, reducing the need for multiple filter types

Comparison

Compared With The Alternatives

Versus Single-layer syringe filters

The multi-layer structure with prefilter extends life in dirty samples, reducing the frequency of filter changes and downtime.

Versus Solvent-bonded filters

Ultrasonic welding avoids adhesive in the flow path, which reduces extractables and is critical for sensitive chromatographic methods.

Versus Whatman Puradisc filters

BioFil™ is specified as a direct replacement for Puradisc filters in the same diameters and membrane types, with comparable performance and lower cost.

Versus Reusable filter holders

A single-use filter eliminates carry-over risk and cleaning validation burden, especially important in biotech and pharmaceutical workflows.

Use Guide

How To Use It

  • Select the membrane based on sample chemistry: PTFE and PP for aggressive solvents, PES and MCE for aqueous samples, Nylon and RC for mixed phases
  • Use 4 mm for small volumes (under 1 mL) with moderate particulates; 13 mm for standard volumes; 25 mm for high-volume or high-particulate samples
  • Choose 0.45 micron for routine HPLC clean-up; 0.22 micron for sterile filtration; 0.70 and 1.0 micron for coarse prefiltration
  • Attach syringe to female luer lock inlet, expel air, and filter at a steady rate
  • Discard the first few drops if the method is sensitive to wetting solvent
  • Do not exceed 6 bar at 23 C; if pressure rises rapidly, switch to a larger diameter or coarser pore size

FAQ

Questions Buyers Ask

What is the difference between BioFil and Easyfil filters?

BioFil has a multi-layer structure with a PP or GF prefilter for high-particulate samples. Easyfil uses a single-layer membrane for low extractables in routine HPLC and GC applications.

Which membrane should I use for protein samples?

Use PES, MCE, or RC membranes for protein samples. Hydrophilic PTFE and hydrophilic PVDF are also suitable for protein-containing matrices.

Can I use the 4 mm filter for large sample volumes?

No. The 4 mm filter has a small filtration area (0.125 cm²) and is intended for small volumes under 1 mL. Use 13 mm or 25 mm for larger volumes.

What is the prefilter made of?

The prefilter is either PP or GF (glass fibre), depending on the part number. GF is used in filters with higher particulate retention capacity.

Is the filter compatible with HPLC systems?

Yes. The ultrasonic welding sealing and low extractables make it suitable for HPLC and GC applications, including gradient runs.

Do you offer private-label packaging?

Yes. The Microlab OEM division supports private-label printing and packing for filter brands and distributors.
