PB-140 Handheld Backscatter X-Ray Imager

The Averguard PB-140 images from one side only, so there is nothing to place behind the target. That is what makes walls, vehicle panels, containers and aircraft panels inspectable at all in the field. A 140 kV tube penetrates 8 mm or more of steel at 1.5 mm wire resolution, and the whole system weighs 4.8 kg including battery with 8 hours of operating time.

Averguard PB-140 handheld backscatter X-ray imager with display arm

Key benefits

  • Single-sided imaging removes the need for rear access to the target
  • 140 kV tube with steel penetration of 8 mm or more
  • 4.8 kg including battery and 8 hours of operating time per charge
  • Scan speed 150 to 300 mm/s with a maximum scan time of 25 seconds
  • Rated from -20°C to 50°C for field rather than indoor-only use

Problems it solves

  • Conventional transmission imaging needs access to both sides of the target
  • Walls, panels and loaded containers cannot be brought to a fixed scanner
  • Dismantling a panel to inspect behind it is destructive and slow
  • Mains-powered equipment is unusable at a roadside or remote position

Who it is for

  • Field inspection teams working where a target cannot be moved
  • Customs and border units inspecting loaded vehicles and containers
  • Government and infrastructure security teams needing portable imaging

Application scenarios

  • Border and customs inspection of vehicles and containers
  • Airport and aviation security checks on panels and structures
  • Prison and correctional screening of fixed walls and fittings
  • Counter-terrorism operations and critical infrastructure protection

Technical features

  • Real-time image display with image mosaic and enhancement
  • Pseudo-colour rendering and photographic capture
  • Optional dual mode with a wireless flat-panel detector for combined backscatter and transmission imaging
  • 128 GB configurable storage
  • Humidity rating 0 to 90% non-condensing

Customisation options

  • Optional wireless flat-panel detector for dual-mode backscatter and transmission imaging
  • Configurable storage capacity

Compared with other models in the range

A tunnel scanner such as the VKJ-6550 gives finer resolution but only for items that can be carried to it. The PB-140 is the opposite trade: lower resolution than a fixed system, but it goes to a wall, a vehicle or a container that will never fit inside one.

Use guide

  • Charge the battery for a full 8-hour operating shift before deployment
  • Hold the scan head against the surface, no rear access is required
  • Move at 150 to 300 mm/s and keep each pass under the 25 second maximum
  • Use image mosaic to assemble adjacent passes over a large panel
  • Add the wireless flat-panel detector when transmission imaging is also needed

PB-140 Handheld Backscatter X-Ray Imager FAQ

Does it need access to the back of the object

No. Single-sided backscatter imaging is the reason to choose it.

How long does the battery last

8 hours of operating time, with the complete system weighing 4.8 kg including the battery.

Can it also do transmission imaging

Yes, with the optional wireless flat-panel detector for combined backscatter and transmission modes.

What temperature range is it rated for

-20°C to 50°C operating and -25°C to 60°C storage, at 0 to 90% non-condensing humidity.
