A foundry producing cast pipe, working the continuous pattern typical of the sector where the process does not pause to suit the handling equipment. The plant runs hot, dusty and without long gaps between cycles.
Casting pipe has to be moved through a foundry environment that punishes equipment, and the handling has to keep pace with a process that runs continuously. The plant needed lifting that would tolerate the conditions on the floor and still place a load where it was wanted rather than approximately where it was wanted.
The foundry environment is harsh on structures drives and electrical equipment
Work continuity means the handling cycle cannot wait for the crane to settle
Positioning accuracy matters because a cast pipe set down badly is scrap
A crane was configured for the casting pipe duty in the foundry with the emphasis placed on the three things that sector demands: continuity of work, positioning accuracy and smoothness of lifting. Rather than starting from a standard workshop machine, the specification was written around the harsh working environment first, then the drives and controls were chosen to give controlled placement at the end of each move.
The order was placed with a crane factory whose established work sits in harsh environment industrial lifting, drawn from the network we have developed over years of placing this class of equipment. Structural sections, the trolley and hoist and the electrical panels were shipped as one marked consignment.
Checks began before production with verification of the factory certification and a pre production review of materials and setup. Welding and the coating system were inspected during fabrication, and the load test was witnessed by our team rather than accepted as a certificate at the gate.
The foundry operates a crane specified against its own conditions, handling cast pipe with the smooth lifting and accurate positioning the process requires, and without the interruptions that follow when general purpose equipment is put into a foundry bay.
The handling stage keeps up with a continuous casting process instead of setting the pace for it, and the plant is not paying repeatedly to repair equipment that was never specified for the environment it works in.
