Kenter Shackle Or Lugged Joining Shackle

Kenter Shackle Or Lugged Joining Shackle

Both join two lengths of anchor chain. They are assembled differently, and that decides which one belongs in your chain run.

What A Kenter Shackle Is

A kenter shackle is a connecting link made of two separate halves, locked together by a centre chock and a secure taper pin. It lets a chain run be joined or repaired without cutting and rewelding, which is why it is the standard repair fitting in the marine industry.

What A Lugged Joining Shackle Is

The D type joining shackle, or anchor shackle, is a forged lugged body supplied in grades U1, U2 and U3 and sizes D12 to D70, made to ISO 1704-2007, IACS W18 and W22 and API 2F.

Matching The Grade

Anchor chain is supplied in grade U2 and U3. Kenter shackles are produced in CM490 and CM690 in the same grades. The joining fitting must match the chain, because the run is rated at its weakest component.

Where Each One Ends Up

Kenter shackles are used to join chain shots and to repair chain in service. Lugged joining shackles are used where the chain assembly is made up to a classified specification with certification through eleven societies.

The Fittings Around Them

At the anchor end the run terminates in a swivel forerunner and a D type or pear shaped end shackle. Order those together with the joining fittings so grades and diameters match.
