The Chain Is The Part That Fails First

An anchor holds because the chain lies along the seabed and keeps the pull horizontal. If the chain is undersized, the pull angles upward and the anchor breaks out, no matter how good the anchor is. Chain grade and diameter are selected from the vessel equipment number, not from what the previous supplier happened to deliver.

Stud Link Or Studless

Stud link chain carries a central stud in every link. The stud adds strength and stops the chain collapsing and knotting in the locker, which is why it is the standard for ship anchor cable. Studless open link chain covers the wider mix of anchoring, lifting, mining, lashing and fishery duties in sizes from 6 mm to 68 mm.

Grade U2 And U3

Anchor chain is supplied in grades U2 and U3 in CM490 and CM690 material. The grade sets the proof and breaking load for a given diameter, so moving up a grade can hold the same load on a smaller diameter chain. Both grades are covered by ISO 1704.

The Fittings At Each End

A chain run is joined by kenter shackles or lugged joining shackles, connected to the anchor through a swivel forerunner and terminated with an end shackle. Every one of those fittings has to carry the same grade as the chain. A U3 chain joined with a U2 shackle is rated at the shackle.

Certification Is Part Of The Product

Chain and fittings are surveyed and certified by the classification society the vessel is registered with. We supply certificates from LR, ABS, BV, CCS, DNV-GL, NK, KR, RINA and RMRS, and the society has to be named before production rather than after.
