Surface Treatments For Marine And Industrial Chain

Self colour, electro galvanized, hot dip galvanized, blackened, carburized and plastic coated: what each finish is actually for.

Self Colour

Untreated steel, usually polished for appearance on ordinary mild steel chain. It is the cheapest option and it is only sensible where the chain stays dry and indoors.

See Ordinary Mild Steel Short Link Chains →

Electro Galvanized

A thin zinc layer applied electrically. It gives a clean bright finish suited to indoor and lightly damp conditions, but the coating is thinner than hot dip and will not survive permanent exposure.

Hot Dip Galvanized

The heaviest zinc coating, and the right choice for outdoor storage, coastal exposure and marine assistance duty. It is also what fish farm mooring chain is specified with for anti-corrosion and longer service life.

See DIN766 Aquaculture Mooring Fishing Chain →

Blackened Carburized And Plastic Coated

Studless chain can also be supplied blackened, carburized or plastic coated. Plastic coating is chosen where the chain touches finished goods and a steel surface would mark them.

See Studless Anchor Chain/Open link Anchor Chain →

Black Painting And Bituminous Paint

Anchor chain and chafe chain are supplied black painted or, for chafe chain, in bituminous paint execution. These are heavy marine coatings for chain that sits exposed on deck and through the chock.

See Chafe Chain →

When To Use Stainless Instead

Where a coating would be worn off mechanically, or where rust staining is unacceptable, AISI 304 and 316 stainless fittings replace a coated carbon steel part rather than being coated themselves.

FAQ

Questions On This Topic

Which finish should I choose for seawater?

Hot dip galvanizing for chain in and out of the water, and 316 stainless for fittings that stay permanently immersed.

Is electro galvanized enough for outdoor storage?

For outdoor and coastal exposure use hot dip galvanized. Electro galvanizing gives a thinner coating suited to indoor and lightly damp use.

Can you supply the same chain in several finishes?

Yes. Ordinary mild steel, DIN and Australian Standard chains are all available in more than one protective finish.
