German standard chain covers DIN766, DIN764, DIN763 and DIN5685 Type A and Type C. The wire diameter can be identical across them. What changes is the inside length of the link, which is what decides how the chain behaves in service.

DIN766 Short Pitch

The short pitch keeps the chain compact and stable, which is what you want where the chain runs over a sprocket, through a fairlead or into a windlass gypsy. It is the least flexible of the three by hand.

DIN764 Medium Pitch

The middle option. More flexible than DIN766, more stable than DIN763, and the usual choice for general industrial rigging, hanging and light securing.
