If forage is traded, moved between yards, or fed out a little at a time, wrapped bales win. Each bale is a sealed unit that can be handled and sold on its own, and only the bale being opened is exposed to air. Film comes in 20 inch by 6000 feet and 30 inch by 5000 feet at 1 mil, and runs on any standard wrapping machine.

If the crop stays where it is stored and the herd is fed from a face, bags are usually cheaper per tonne and far quicker to fill. There are no civil works, so storage can be added in the season it is needed rather than in the year the budget allows, and it can be sited wherever the crop is.

Both Fail The Same Way

Neither product tolerates a puncture. A tear in a wrapped bale or a bag lets air in and restarts spoilage locally, and it spreads. Site both on dry, level and stubble free ground, inspect regularly, and patch damage the day you find it. This single habit matters more than the choice between the two products.

What Most Farms Actually Do

Plenty of operations run both: bags for the bulk of the corn silage that stays on the yard, wrapped bales for haylage that has to move or be sold. Because both are produced in the same plant, they can be ordered and shipped together rather than sourced separately.
