Baler Twine Selection Guide For Square Balers
Matching pound rating and roll length to your baler and bale weight, and why the knot is where twine usually fails.
Read The Two Numbers Together
Baler twine is sold as a pound rating and a length, and the two move against each other: a 650 lbs twine runs 3600 ft while a 170 lbs twine runs 9600 ft on a comparable package. Heavier twine means fewer bales per package but the strength a dense bale needs. Choosing on length alone is how a yard ends up with twine that snaps.

Match The Rating To Bale Weight
As a working rule, light hay in small square bales runs well on the lighter ratings from 150 lbs to 210 lbs, general square baling sits in the 350 lbs to 440 lbs band, and dense straw or large square bales need 500 lbs to 650 lbs. Baler tension setting matters as much as crop, so if you run tight, move up a rating.
