Steel Sphere Water Fountain
A water fountain sculpture composed of a hollow stainless steel sphere mounted in a pedestal tube, where water flows over the mirror-polished surface. Constructed from AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel, the sphere is formed by stamping and seam welding, then polished to reflect water movement. The design allows water to ripple and cascade over the sphere, creating a dynamic visual and auditory feature suitable for gardens, lobbies, and public spaces.

Key Benefits
- Hollow construction keeps the sphere light enough for two people to lift and position without heavy plant
- Mirror polished AISI 304 and AISI 316 resist corrosion and maintain reflection in outdoor and indoor environments
- Water flows over the entire surface, creating a continuous visual and sound effect without mechanical parts
- Pedestal tube is welded to the sphere base so no site assembly is needed after delivery
- Durable stainless steel withstands continuous water exposure without rust or degradation
Problems It Solves
- Solid or cast steel spheres become too heavy to install once over 1 metre in diameter
- Painted or coated spheres degrade at the seam when exposed to constant water flow
- Water features with pumps and pipes require maintenance, power, and plumbing
- Site welding a pedestal to a finished sphere risks damaging the mirror finish
- Buying the sphere and pedestal from separate suppliers leads to mismatched polish and alignment
Application Scenarios
Public parks and gardens where a reflective water feature draws attention and invites interaction
Lobbies and atriums of hotels, shopping centres, and science museums with high foot traffic
Private gardens and courtyard spaces where a quiet, self-contained water feature enhances ambiance
Campus and municipal plazas where a durable, low-maintenance sculpture serves as a landmark
Interior installations where the sound of flowing water masks background noise and adds sensory depth
Mixed installations where multiple spheres in different sizes create a cascading water sculpture
Who It Is For
- Landscape architects designing interactive water features in public and private spaces
- Interior designers specifying reflective, sound-enhancing elements in commercial lobbies
- Property developers adding a unique, durable feature to attract tenants or visitors
- Municipal planners commissioning low-maintenance public art for urban plazas
- Sculpture installers sourcing a ready-to-mount water feature with integrated pedestal
- Film and VFX studios needing a real-world HDRI reference ball with flowing water
Technical Features
- Hollow sphere formed from two stamped hemispheres, seam welded and ground to an invisible joint
- AISI 304 for general outdoor use and AISI 316 for coastal, poolside, or high-moisture environments
- Pedestal tube welded to the sphere base before polishing so alignment is fixed
- Mirror polished finish ensures water reflection is clear and uninterrupted
- Water flow designed to run over the entire surface, not just a single point
- Drain hole or overflow port can be added to the pedestal if required

Materials
- AISI 304 stainless steel, suitable for inland gardens, parks, and indoor lobbies
- AISI 316 stainless steel, recommended for coastal areas, pool surrounds, and high-humidity zones
- Carbon steel, available on request where the sphere is fully coated or used in enclosed systems
Customization
- Wall thickness selected based on structural needs and weight constraints
- Pedestal tube height, diameter, and angle adjusted to match the installation site
- Drain or overflow hole added to the pedestal if required
- Mirror, brushed, or matt finish applied to the sphere or pedestal
- Multiple spheres in a set can be polished in the same batch for consistent appearance
How It Is Made
- Step 1Sheet cut and blanked to the required diameter and thickness
- Step 2Hemispheres stamped on a press and prepared for welding
- Step 3Halves fitted and seam welded into a closed sphere
- Step 4Weld ground and blended until the joint is invisible in reflection
- Step 5Pedestal tube welded to the base of the sphere at the correct angle and position
- Step 6Mirror polished through progressive grits to achieve a specular finish
- Step 7Optional vacuum metallising, electroplating, or candy colour spray applied
- Step 8Protective film applied, foam wrapped, and cased in a strong wooden or iron crate
Quality Control and Use
Quality Control
- Seam inspected under reflected light to ensure no flat spots or weld imperfections
- Diameter and wall thickness verified before polishing begins
- Pedestal tube alignment checked against the drawing before welding
- Finished sphere kept under protective film until packing
- Photographs of the completed fountain sent for approval before the balance is invoiced
Use Guide
- Specify the diameter, wall thickness, finish, and pedestal height when requesting a quote
- Send the site drawing so the pedestal angle and base position match the installation
- Use AISI 316 if the fountain is within a few hundred metres of salt water or near a pool
- Keep the protective film on until the sphere is bolted down and the site is clean
- Wash with clean water and a soft cloth, never a wire brush or a chloride cleaner
Compared With The Alternatives
| Alternative | How this product compares |
|---|---|
| Cast or solid steel spheres | Much lighter for the same diameter, so installation needs less lifting plant, but a hollow ball is not a load bearing element |
| Painted mild steel spheres | No repainting cycle and no seam rust, at a higher first cost |
| GRP or acrylic spheres | Real specular reflection and no yellowing outdoors, but heavier and slower to produce |
| Stainless steel hemispheres | A closed sphere reads as a complete form, while a hemisphere is cheaper when it sits against a wall or floor |

AISI 304 vs 316 Stainless Steel for Outdoor Sculpture
When 304 is enough, when 316 earns the extra cost, and why chloride rather than rain is what actually attacks a polished surface.
How to Choose Wall Thickness for a Stainless Steel Sphere
What 1 mm, 2 mm and 6 mm walls actually change, and why thickness is a handling decision more than a strength one.
Mirror Polishing Explained for Stainless Steel Sculpture
Why the quality of a mirror finish is decided during welding and fixing, long before the piece reaches the polishing shop.
Questions About Steel Sphere Water Fountain
What is the largest diameter you can make?
3000 mm on the standard press tooling. Intermediate diameters between 19 mm and 3000 mm are available at the same cost as round numbers.
How long does an order take?
20 to 30 days after the deposit is received. Larger or mixed-size orders may take the full 30 days.
Should I use 304 or 316?
304 is fine for inland gardens, parks, and interiors. Choose 316 for coastal sites, pool surrounds, and areas with de-icing salt.
Can you add a drain hole to the pedestal?
Yes. Specify the location and size when placing the order. The hole is drilled before polishing to avoid damaging the finish.
How are the fountains packed for shipping?
Soft foam plastic against the sphere, then a strong wooden or iron case. Large fountains are cradled on a wooden stand inside the case.
What are the payment terms?
T/T with 50% deposit and 50% balance before shipping. Photographs of the finished fountain are sent before the balance is invoiced.
