Strain/Guy Insulators ANSI 54-2

ANSI 54-2 Strain Insulator for Distribution Guys

ANSI 54-2 is the compact porcelain strain and guy insulator: 73 mm diameter, 108 mm high, with a 12,000 pound (53 kN) tensile strength and a net weight of 0.65 kg. It is the standard guy insulator for distribution pole lines, sized so it can be carried and fitted in quantity during routine pole work.

Key Benefits

  • 53 kN tensile strength at only 0.65 kg
  • Keeps the anchor end of a guy at earth potential
  • 30 kV dry and 15 kV wet low-frequency flashover voltage
  • Compact 108 mm body fits standard guy assemblies

Technical Features

  • 73 mm diameter, 108 mm height, 48 mm leakage distance
  • 12,000 pound (53 kN) tensile strength
  • Interlocking body form, grey or brown glaze
  • 0.65 kg net weight

Application Scenarios

  • Guy wires on distribution angle and terminal poles
  • Service pole anchors in streets and yards
  • Temporary guying during line construction

Who It Is For

  • Distribution utilities and rural networks
  • Pole line crews fitting guys in volume
  • Wholesalers supplying line hardware kits

Problems It Solves

  • Live guy wires within public reach
  • Heavy guy components that slow down routine pole work
  • Inconsistent guy insulator dimensions across supply batches
Comparison

How This Design Differs From the Alternatives

Compared With ANSI 54-3

Lighter and smaller at 53 kN against 91 kN; use 54-2 on distribution guys and 54-3 where dead-end tension is high.

Compared With ANSI 53-3 spool insulator

A tension component fitted in the guy line, where the spool carries a conductor on a secondary rack.

Use Guide

Specifying and Installing This Unit

  • Apply your safety factor to the 53 kN rating against the calculated guy tension
  • Fit so the load is axial and the body is not bent
  • Place above reach height on public access guys
  • Reject units with chipped or cracked porcelain before fitting
Questions Buyers Ask

Questions About This Product

How many guy insulators per guy wire?

Most distribution standards use one, positioned above reach height. Some utilities fit a second near the pole on higher voltage structures. Follow your own guy standard.

Is 53 kN enough for a distribution guy?

For typical distribution dead-ends it is, but the guy tension calculation decides. Where the tension approaches the rating, use 54-3.

What are the order quantities?

These are supplied in volume for pole line programmes. Send your annual quantity and delivery schedule with the enquiry.

Can porcelain guy insulators be repaired?

No. A cracked or fissured unit has to be replaced. Surface chip repairs with epoxy resin are only a temporary measure until replacements arrive.

Which glaze colours are available?

Grey and brown, with no difference in mechanical or electrical performance.
