Strain/Guy Insulators ANSI 54-3
ANSI 54-3 Strain Insulator Rated 91 kN Tensile
ANSI 54-3 is the heavy porcelain strain and guy insulator: 86 mm diameter, 140 mm high, with a 20,000 pound (91 kN) tensile strength and a net weight of 1.2 kg. It is installed in a guy wire or a strain assembly to interrupt the metallic path and isolate the anchor from line potential, and its strength lets it sit in guys that carry heavy dead-end loads.
Key Benefits
- 91 kN tensile strength in a 1.2 kg component
- Interrupts the guy wire so the anchor stays at earth potential
- 35 kV dry and 18 kV wet low-frequency flashover voltage
- Grey or brown glaze to match line hardware
Technical Features
- 86 mm diameter, 140 mm height, 57 mm leakage distance
- 20,000 pound (91 kN) tensile strength
- Interlocking porcelain body that stays captive if it fractures
- 1.2 kg net weight

Application Scenarios
- Guy wires on transmission and heavy distribution dead-end structures
- Strain assemblies on angle and terminal poles
- Anchor guys running close to public access areas
Who It Is For
- Line construction contractors
- Utilities setting guy and anchor standards
- Distributors supplying pole line hardware
Problems It Solves
- Guy wires that become live when a conductor contacts them
- Anchor points inside reach of the public or livestock
- Strain components that fail under heavy dead-end tension
How This Design Differs From the Alternatives
Compared With ANSI 54-2 strain insulator
Nearly double the tensile strength at 91 kN against 53 kN, for guys on heavier structures.
Compared With ANSI 52-1 suspension disc
A single guy component rather than a stackable string unit; the disc is used where voltage withstand must be built up by adding units.
Specifying and Installing This Unit
- Install so the guy load is axial through the insulator, not bent across it
- Position it above reach height on any guy that the public can access
- Check the guy tension against the 91 kN rating with your safety factor applied
- Replace rather than repair a fractured unit
Questions About This Product
How high up the guy should the insulator sit?
Above the reach of people and livestock, and below the point where a broken conductor could bridge it. Your utility guy standard will give the exact dimension.
What happens if the porcelain fractures?
The interlocking body form keeps the two halves captive, so a fractured unit does not release the guy immediately. It must still be replaced at the first opportunity.
Is 57 mm of leakage enough?
A strain insulator is not designed to hold system voltage continuously; it interrupts the metallic path and withstands transient contact. The 35 kV dry and 18 kV wet flashover figures are the design references.
Which size should we standardise on?
54-3 for heavy dead-end and transmission guys, 54-2 for distribution guys. Many utilities stock both and allocate by structure class.
Are they supplied with hardware?
We supply the porcelain component. Tell us the guy grip and thimble arrangement you use and we will confirm dimensional compatibility.
