Engineered board is the workhorse of the game table industry. It machines cleanly takes printed graphics and veneers well and keeps cabinet weight and freight cost sensible. Solid Timber

Slate
Slate is used as a billiard bed where flatness has to survive years of daily play. It is the reference standard for clubs halls and serious installations. Slate is heavy which changes the packing plan the container loading and the site installation. It is a ten year purchase not a shelf product.
Choosing Between Them
Match the bed to the play hours. A home table played a few hours a week does not need slate. A club table played twelve hours a day does. Between those extremes the honest question is how long the buyer expects the table to stay in service and whether the site can handle the weight.
What Does Not Change
Whatever the bed the cabinet still has to be square the rails still have to be level and the cloth and cushions still wear. Those consumables are catalogue lines regardless of which bed you chose.
