Toothbrush Handle
A slim handheld handle with moulded button apertures and an indicator window, the classic case for a two-shot over-mould once a soft grip is added.
The problem
A long thin handle is hard to fill evenly and hard to keep straight, and the moment a soft-touch grip is added the job changes from one tool to a two-material tool with a completely different cost structure.
A long thin handle is hard to fill evenly and hard to keep straight, and the moment a soft-touch grip is added the job changes from one tool to a two-material tool with a completely different cost structure.
TJ-Teck builds 2K over-moulds and 2K rotational moulds as standard mould types, so the handle can be quoted both ways and you can see what the soft grip actually costs before committing.
How this part is tooled
The handle shown is a single-material body with a row of small apertures and one larger indicator opening. In that form it is a straight-pull part with shut-offs, and the difficulty is filling a long thin section without a visible flow mark down the face.
Add a soft-touch grip and it becomes a two-shot part. That means either a 2K over-mould, where the rigid substrate is moulded first and the soft layer moulded over it, or a 2K rotational mould, where the core rotates between two cavities inside one cycle.
The two routes have very different economics. An over-mould with two separate tools is cheaper to build and slower to run. A rotational 2K tool costs more up front and produces a finished handle every cycle. Which one is right depends entirely on annual volume, which is why the quotation asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 2K over mould and a 2K rotational mould?
An over mould uses two tools and a transfer step between them. A rotational 2K tool rotates the core between two cavities inside one cycle, so a finished two-material part leaves the machine every shot. Both are quoted as standard mould types.
Which route is cheaper for a low volume?
Usually the over-mould, because the tooling investment is lower even though the cycle is longer. Send your annual volume with the enquiry and both options are priced.
Can you mould a soft-touch grip onto an existing handle tool?
Often yes, if the existing part has the right bond area and the substrate material is compatible. Send a sample handle and the existing 3D data for review.
