COB vs SMD LED Strip Light For Vehicle Interiors

How The Two Are Built

SMD strip carries individual surface mount LED packages spaced along the circuit. COB strip bonds the emitters directly and covers them with a continuous phosphor layer, so the whole strip lights up as one line. The circuit underneath is similar; what changes is what you see.

The Dotting Problem

Point an SMD strip at a wall from a few centimetres away and you see a row of bright dots with dark gaps. A deep diffuser blends them; a shallow trim channel in a camper headliner does not. COB strip removes the problem entirely, which is why interior fitters pay the premium for it.

Bending And Curves

On a tight radius an SMD strip scallops, because the spacing between packages changes around the curve. COB strip follows the curve as a continuous line. If the run goes around a corner inside a cabin, COB is the easier product to make look right.

Heat And Efficiency

SMD packages have a slightly better thermal path per emitter and are usually cheaper per metre. For a long run inside a hidden channel where nobody will ever look directly at the strip, SMD remains a reasonable choice. The decision is about visibility, not about quality.

Choosing For A Vehicle Or Boat

Use COB where the strip or its immediate reflection is visible: headliners, cabin trim, galley under-cupboard runs. Use SMD where it is hidden and the budget matters. For wet positions specify a silicone coated version of either, and always buy a single build from one reel so the colour temperature matches down the whole vehicle.
