Duty cycle, thermal headroom, sealing and beam pattern decide whether a work lamp lasts a season or a shift. Lumens barely enter into it.
The single most useful question about a work lamp is how long it runs without cooling down. A lamp that produces a headline figure for the first ten minutes and then throttles back as the driver heats up will measure well on a bench and disappoint on a machine. Ask how the housing moves heat out of the LED, and whether the lamp was designed for a twelve hour shift or for a weekend.
A flood beam puts a wide pool of light close to the machine, which is what an operator needs to see the bucket, the load and the ground crew. A spot beam throws down a track and is what you want facing forward on a moving vehicle. Most machines end up with both: flood at the sides and rear, spot forward. Fitting spot lamps all round produces a bright patch surrounded by darkness and makes the operator’s eyes worse, not better.
A sealed lamp heats up, the air inside expands, it cools, and the air contracts and draws moisture past the seal. That cycle, repeated daily, is what kills lamps in wet environments, and it is why a lamp can pass a static ingress test and still fill with water in service. Look at how the cable enters the housing, because that is usually the weak point.
A tall housing on a small bracket is a lever, and vibration will work that lever until something cracks. Low profile housings mounted to structural members survive; tall lamps bolted to sheet metal do not. Leave a service loop in the cable so the cable absorbs movement instead of the gland.
Work lamps facing forward on a road vehicle often need homologation. Electromagnetic compatibility matters if the vehicle carries telematics or radio. Sunlitec work lights are E-mark approved and tested to CISPR 25 Class 4 and FMVSS 108, which covers the common cases, but confirm what your market requires before you commit to a container.
