Choosing Thickness And Coil Width For Writing Steel

How board size, framing and lamination decide the numbers on your order.

Thickness follows the board construction

Painted writing steel is available from 0.2mm to 0.6mm. Thinner material suits a face bonded to a rigid core, where the core carries the flatness. Thicker material suits boards where the steel has to stay flat with less support behind it.

Ceramic starts thicker

Ceramic writing steel starts at 0.4mm and runs to 0.6mm, because the vitreous enamel surface is fired onto a steel base that has to stay stable through that process.

Width follows the board plan

Coil width runs 600mm to 1500mm. Set the width so the number of board faces per width leaves the least trim. Cutting plans usually move a board size by a few millimetres and save more than a discount negotiation does.

Coil format follows your line

All writing steel is supplied on a 508mm inner diameter with coil weight from 2 to 4 tons. If your decoiler mandrel or crane capacity limits either figure, say so with the enquiry rather than after the booking.
