Track lighting fails on site for one reason more than any other: the head does not fit the rail, or the rail cannot switch the groups the client asked for. Both are decided months earlier, at the order. This is the checklist we run with buyers before a track order goes into production, covering wire count, adapter, rail profile, current rating and dimming type.
Every Step And What Can Go Wrong In It
Wire count
Problem: Two-wire rail cannot give the separately switched groups a retail client expects
How we handle it: We work back from how many lighting groups have to switch independently: two wires for one group, three for two, four for three
Adapter match
Problem: Heads and rail bought from different factories often will not lock together
How we handle it: We supply rail and heads as a matched set, and check the adapter against the rail before shipment
Rail profile
Problem: Extending an existing installation with a different section leaves a visible step
How we handle it: Our four-wire rail is sized to match Nordic Track. Send a photo of the installed rail end and we confirm before production
Current rating
Problem: Too many heads on one run exceeds the rail rating
How we handle it: We total the head wattage against the rail rating, which is 16A on the four-wire rail, and split the run if needed
Dimming type
Problem: Dimming cannot be retrofitted to a head that was not built for it
How we handle it: Triac or DALI is declared at order and built into the head, and we confirm it against the control system you are using
Length schedule
Problem: Rail cut on site leaves untidy joints and wasted material
How we handle it: Rail is supplied in 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 metre lengths and the schedule is built from your ceiling grid
