Wire count decides how many lighting groups you can switch on one rail. Getting it wrong means rewiring the ceiling or reordering the heads.
What The Wire Count Actually Means
The number in the name is the number of conductors in the rail. Two wires carry one switched live and neutral, so every head on the run turns on together. Three wires carry two switched lives, giving two independently controlled groups. Four wires carry three switched lives, giving three groups. The earth is separate in all cases.
Choose From The Number Of Lighting Scenes
Work backwards from what the client wants to control. A single boutique aisle needs one group. A shop that switches window, feature and general lighting separately needs three, which means four-wire rail. Do this before the electrical design is issued, because adding a group later means new rail and new heads.
The Systems Are Not Interchangeable
A three-wire head will not work correctly on a four-wire rail and vice versa. The adapter geometry and the contact positions differ. This is the most common reason a track order stalls on site, and it is entirely avoidable by ordering rail and heads together.
Check The Profile Before Extending An Existing Run
If you are adding to an installation someone else supplied, the section size matters as much as the wire count. Our four-wire rail is built to the same size as Nordic Track. Send a photo of the rail end and the existing head adapter and we will confirm the match before production.
Watch The Current Rating On Long Runs
Total the wattage of every head on a run and keep it inside the rail rating. Our four-wire rail is rated at 16A. If the total goes over, split the run and feed it from two points rather than hoping the margin holds.
Decide Dimming At The Same Time
Triac and DALI dimming is built into the head, not added later. Decide the control system, the wire count and the dimming type in one conversation, because all three constrain each other.
