Specifying Lit Medicine Cabinets for North American Projects
What to confirm when specifying a lit medicine cabinet for a North American hotel, multi-family or healthcare project, from body material to shelf type.
Lit medicine cabinets are increasingly popular in North America, and the specification usually gets written as if the cabinet were a mirror with a box behind it. It is not. The cabinet has moving parts, carries load and lives in steam.
Body Material Is the First Decision
An anti-rust aluminium body does not swell, rust or delaminate in a wet room. Coated steel and board bodies both fail eventually in a bathroom, usually at the bottom edge where water sits.
All our lit medicine cabinets use an anti-rust aluminium body, with the same environmental silver mirror specification as our lighted mirrors.
Shelves and Interior
Adjustable tempered glass shelves let the interior be set to what is actually stored, and tempered glass survives a dropped bottle better than the acrylic used in retail cabinets.
Magnifier mirrors and double door versions are part of the standard range rather than special orders.
Sizes and Wall Build Up
Standard sizes are W24" x H36", W30" x H36" and W36" x H36", plus custom sizes. The important number is the wall depth, which decides whether the cabinet is surface mounted or recessed.
Settle that before the opening is formed. Changing it afterwards is a carpentry problem, not a mirror problem.
Lighting and Functions
The cabinet uses the same flexible LED strip specification as our mirrors, at 50,000 hours rated life and 10W/m to 22W/m, meeting JA8 standards and Title 24 requirements.
Anti-fog, clock, dimming, Bluetooth speaker, shaver socket and changeable light colour are all available, operated from a touch switch.
