Defogger Dimming and Lighting Options for Mirrors
The options are where a mirror stops being a mirror and starts being part of the guest experience. They are also where a specification goes wrong, because each option adds an electrical requirement that has to be agreed before first fix, not after.
Every Stage From Requirement to Handover
- Stage 1
Function Selection
Anti-fog defogger, clock, dimming by touch switch or wall dimmer, Bluetooth speaker, shaver socket and changeable light colour are the available options.
- Stage 2
Switch Strategy
A single touch switch can handle on and off, dimming, defogger and light colour change, or the functions can be split across wall switches.
- Stage 3
Electrical Coordination
Each added function is confirmed against the circuit before first fix, so the electrician is not surprised at final fix.
- Stage 4
Light Output Choice
Flexible LED strip, T5 LED tube or rigid strip with diffuser, at 10W/m to 22W/m with a 50,000 hour rated life.
- Stage 5
Frosting and Diffuser Choice
Standard white frosting, ice flower frosting, cotton fibre frosting or an acrylic diffuser, matched to the finish scheme.
- Stage 6
Compliance Check
Specification is checked against JA8 standards and Title 24 requirements and against the certificates the project needs.

Which functions can be combined?
Anti-fog, clock, dimming, Bluetooth speaker, shaver socket and changeable light colour can all be specified together, subject to the circuit.
Does dimming need a special wall dimmer?
Dimming can be handled by the touch switch on the mirror or by a wall dimmer. Confirm which you want before production.
What LED output should I specify?
Between 10W/m and 22W/m depending on how bright the bathroom needs to be and what other lighting is in the room.
Do the mirrors meet California requirements?
The lighting specification meets JA8 standards and Title 24 requirements.
