UL ETL and CE Certification for Lighted Mirrors Explained
What UL, cUL, ETL, cETL, CE, SAA, IP44 and RoHS actually cover on a lighted bathroom mirror, and which ones your project needs.
Certification is the first question on most project enquiries and the one most often answered badly. A supplier saying they are certified without saying to what is not an answer, because the certificate lists on a bathroom mirror cover several different things.
What the North American Marks Cover
UL and ETL are both nationally recognised testing laboratory marks in the United States, and the c prefix in cUL and cETL is the Canadian equivalent. For a lighted mirror they cover the electrical safety of the product and its components.
We hold UL, cUL, ETL and cETL certificates for our lighted mirrors and lit medicine cabinets, and all electrical parts used in the products are UL listed or CE certified.
What CE SAA and RoHS Cover
CE is the European conformity mark, SAA is the Australian one, and RoHS covers restricted hazardous substances in the product rather than electrical safety.
If your project is in Western Europe, the Middle East or Australia, these are the marks the specification is likely to reference. We hold CE, SAA and RoHS alongside the North American marks.
What IP44 Means in a Bathroom
IP44 describes protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and against splashing water from any direction. In a bathroom that is the relevant rating for a mirror mounted over a vanity.
It is not a rating for a mirror inside a shower enclosure. If the mirror is going somewhere unusually wet, say so at enquiry stage so the specification can be checked.
What Certification Does Not Cover
None of these marks say anything about whether the silver edge will corrode, whether the powder coating will stay on the frame, or whether the frosting band will look the same on the last unit as on the first. Those come from the construction and the inspection regime, not from the certificate.
That is why we use copper-free and lead-free environmental silver glass, powder coat the metal before assembly and inspect every unit before it is packed.
