The Relationship Between Media Facades and LED Lighting

Compared with the indirect promotion of mobile internet technology and electronic advertising for media facades, the improvement and popularization of new lighting technologies, especially LED technology, is the most direct technical reason for the rapid formation of media facades, and why is the most active media today. Most of the façade scholars are born in the field of lighting, and the institutions engaged in media façade research are mostly related to LED or related industries.

The media facade is a comprehensive system that covers architecture, art, media content and lighting. In the whole system, media information mainly depends on lighting or optical imaging technology. Before the improvement of LED technology, other optoelectronic technologies, either technically or in terms of cost, could not meet the requirements of fine expression of media information, and could not be compared with LEDs in terms of coupling with building facade materials and structures. Therefore, in a certain sense, LED has created the media facade.

According to Canadian media scholar Marshall McLuhan, the media conveys not only the information it carries, but also the characteristics of the media itself. It is these characteristics of the medium that determine the clarity and internal structure of the information [7]. Based on the key position of lighting technology in the whole system, media facades can be divided into three categories according to the principle and characteristics of light formation: natural light and shadow media facade, mechanical motion media facade, electro-optical media facade

Based on the background, type and characteristics of the media façade, a good media façade should handle three aspects: First, the relationship with the building should be combined with the architectural design concept and the building façade structure. Part of the overall expression of the building; second, the relationship with culture should be separated from the simple state of commercial advertising, placing art in the primary position, using itself as a stage for cultural communication and artistic expression; third, with the public Relationships should focus on public awareness, attach importance to public participation, and allow yourself to breathe with the public.

The media facade is not a simple facade + a large screen. It has experienced the initial confusion. Under the joint effect of technological innovation, design and artistic concepts, the media facade has gradually defined its own characteristics, which can be summarized as: coupling with architecture specification, the artistic expression of content, and the interactivity of people.
