The Material

Kraft paper is a tough, water-resistant packaging paper with a brownish-yellow colour and a wide range of uses. The basis weight range is from 80 g/m2 to 120 g/m2. There are differences between web and flat paper, single-sided light, double-sided light, and stripe. The main quality requirements are flexibility and strength, high burst resistance, and the ability to withstand greater tension and pressure without breaking.

Why Tensile Strength Matters On A Converting Line

Kraft paper has a high tensile strength, which is what allows it to be die cut, embossed, perforated and folded at speed without tearing. It is made from long fibres of unbleached wood pulp, and that fibre length is the reason a fanfold stack can survive heavy handling in a fulfilment centre.

Grades Used Across This Machine Range

Each machine has a published paper range. Honeycomb die cutting runs 70 g to 100 g. Paper bubble runs from 60 gsm upward, and the sheet machine from 80 gsm to 180 gsm. Fanfold folding runs 40 gsm to 150 gsm. Cushion forming runs 70 gsm to 80 gsm. Shredding covers the widest range at 14 gsm to 350 gsm.

Common Applications

Kraft paper is used across the chemical and machinery industries and is especially widely used in food packaging. It is used to make paper bags, envelopes, workbooks, record sleeves, files and sandpaper, as well as handbags, colour boxes, gift boxes and printing kraft.
