How to Ship Chocolate Without Melting It
Packaging cannot refrigerate anything. What it can do is buy time, prevent physical damage and keep the product presentable when it arrives.
Be honest about what the box does
A paper box is not an insulator in any meaningful sense. Treat the packaging as protection against crushing, abrasion and light, and treat heat as a route and timing problem.
Control the route and the season
Shipping windows, transit time and the temperature at the destination do more for chocolate than any material choice. Plan seasonal collections so the product moves before the warm months at either end.
Use the tray to prevent contact damage
Softened chocolate marks easily. Individual cavities keep pieces off each other, so even a warm shipment arrives with its arrangement intact.
Specify the outer carton properly
We ship in 5-ply K=A cartons and add angle beads for rigid boxes in bulk. The outer carton is what protects your retail boxes from the pallet next to them.
Consider insulated outer layers for direct shipment
For direct-to-consumer chocolate in warm months, the insulation belongs in the shipping layer rather than the retail box, which keeps the retail pack clean and the cost in the right place.
Test before the season, not during it
Send a sample shipment on your actual route and open it at the other end. It is the only test that reflects your real conditions.
Talk it through with the factory
If you are specifying a box now, send the product dimensions, the filled weight and the quantity. We will come back with a structure recommendation rather than a catalogue.
