Electric Boat Motors That Outlast the Boating Season

Five platforms, 80 LB to 180 LB of thrust, all built on a brushless drive with the control board inside the housing and cooled by the water around it. No carbon brushes, no gearbox, no annual service.

What We Make

Five Platforms Built on One Drive

Thrust, voltage, maximum amp and maximum propeller speed match model for model across the platforms. What changes between them is how the drive mounts and where the boat is steered from.

What Problem We Solve

Three Things That Stop an Electric Boat Drive Working

Each of them has a specific answer in the Caroute range rather than a general claim about quality.

1

The drive fails mid-season

A brushed motor commutates through a sliding carbon brush, which wears out. There is no brush in a Caroute drive — the company quotes five times the service life of a conventional electric motor and no maintenance requirement.

2

The battery runs out before the day does

Efficiency values are significantly higher, up to 50%, which converts directly into 30% to 60% more range or power from the same limited battery capacity.

3

The controls do not fit the boat

Tiller, steering wheel, engine mount, bare drive and PWM signal control are five separate platforms rather than one motor with adapters.

Why Caroute

Why the Control Board Sits Inside the Motor

Caroute builds an inner motor IC control board that cools itself with the surrounding water. Optimised IC control programming and brushless technology together mean that, for the same thrust and output power, a Caroute motor draws less input power than a competing electric motor.

  • An 80 lb motor runs from one 12 V battery

And a 160 lb motor from 24 V — lower input power for the same thrust means a smaller, lighter bank.

  • Up to 50% higher efficiency values

Measured against the brushed electric motors that dominate the trolling motor market.

  • Much higher torque at lower battery currents

Which is what moves a loaded hull off a mooring without dragging the bank down.

  • Quieter power and cooler operation

Water cooling keeps the electronics temperature down under sustained load.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the thrust rating?
Caroute publishes operating data for the N platform by boat displacement: up to 1.0 t for the N100, 1.5 t for the N150, 2.0 t for the N200, 3.0 t for the N300 and 4.0 t for the N400. Send your loaded displacement and you will get a model back.
What is the difference between the five platforms?
Thrust and electrical ratings match model for model. N is steered by extendable tiller, W by steering wheel and cable, E and R mount on an engine bracket, and S is supplied without a mount for builders.
Do the motors work in salt water?
A stainless steel body with engineering plastics caps is offered for high-corrosive and high-salt environments across the N, W, S and E platforms.
Can the motor be controlled remotely?
PWM signal control, or PWM with wireless control, is standard on the R platform and available as an option on the N, S, W and E platforms at 80 LB, 100 LB and 120 LB.
What shaft lengths are available?
42" is standard on the N and S platforms and 32" on the W platform. 10", 24", 32", 42" and 52" appear across the range — check the platform page for which apply.
Can I buy direct?
Two packages — the W platform steering wheel type and the N platform tiller type — are sold direct with freight included to seven countries. Everything else goes through a direct enquiry to Jane Cao.

Send the boat, get the specification

Loaded displacement and transom height are the two numbers that set the thrust rating and the shaft length. Send those and Jane will come back with a configuration.
