Caroute builds brushless electric boat motors. One design decision runs through the whole range, and it is worth stating plainly.
The design decision
A Caroute brushless boat trolling motor carries an inner motor IC control board that cools itself with the surrounding water. Optimised IC control programming and brushless technology together make the drive efficient enough that, to produce the same thrust and output power, a Caroute motor draws less input power than a competing electric motor.
That is not an abstract claim. It is why a Caroute 80 lb motor only requires a 12 V battery, and why a 160 lb motor only requires 24 V, where other motors at the same thrust need more. The motor can be smaller, lighter and easier on the battery bank.
What that gives the owner
Efficiency values significantly higher — up to 50% — against a competing brushed electric motor. Much higher torque at lower battery currents. Five times longer service life with no maintenance requirement. Quieter power, cooler operation and less battery consumption.

The range
Five platforms cover the same thrust ladder from 80 LB to 180 LB and differ only in mounting and control: N with an extendable tiller, W with steering wheel and cable, E and R on an engine mount, and S supplied without a mount for builders to integrate.
Larger thrust and higher power e-motors are under development.
