Carbide for Oil Industry

Tungsten Carbide Sleeves for Oil Field Equipment

Large carbide sleeves with drilled hole patterns including 176 hole and 82 hole designs

  • Bore geometry holds. The internal bore keeps its size in abrasive flow so downstream clearances stay correct.
  • Complex hole patterns. Hole layouts of well over one hundred holes in a single sleeve are machined in house.
  • Large diameters. Sleeve outside diameters in the 268 mm class have been produced.

Product Overview

Overview

Tungsten carbide sleeves for oil field service equipment where abrasive fluid would erode a steel sleeve within one run. We have produced sleeves of OD 268 mm x ID 228.6 mm x H 160 mm carrying 176 holes and sleeves carrying 82 holes together with carbide oil shaft sleeves and drilling bushes.

Application Scenarios

  • Oil exploration and well completion equipment
  • Abrasive fluid handling sleeves
  • Shaft sleeves and drilling bushes

Problems It Solves

  • Abrasive well fluid erodes steel sleeves and bushings within one run
  • Erosion changes flow geometry and the pump stops holding pressure
  • A failed downhole wear part costs far more in intervention than in material
Key Benefits

Why Customers Specify This Product

Bore geometry holds

The internal bore keeps its size in abrasive flow so downstream clearances stay correct.

Complex hole patterns

Hole layouts of well over one hundred holes in a single sleeve are machined in house.

Large diameters

Sleeve outside diameters in the 268 mm class have been produced.

Drawing based

Bore tolerance hole pattern and length come from your drawing.

  • Second documented pattern with 82 holes
  • Ground bore and outside diameter
  • Hole pattern machined to drawing
Materials

Material and Grade

Cemented tungsten carbide consisting of tungsten carbide grain in a cobalt binder. Binder content and grain size are chosen against your load case because hardness and toughness move in opposite directions. Our engineers propose a direction and explain the trade off rather than quoting a grade code you cannot verify. See the grade guide.

How It Is Made

Manufacturing Process and Quality Control

Every part follows the same production route. Critical dimensions are agreed on the drawing so both sides measure the same thing.

1. Powder PreparationBall milling and spray drying to a uniform granulate
2. PressingBlank pressed with machining stock where required
3. Sinter-HIPDensified under isostatic pressure to reduce porosity
4. MachiningGrinding EDM and lapping to the approved drawing
5. InspectionCritical dimensions checked before packing
6. Export PackingProtected packing for air or sea freight
Certifications

Certificate copies and material documentation are supplied on request with your order. We do not publish certificate claims that we cannot show you so ask for exactly what your import or QA process requires and we will confirm what can be provided.

Customization Options
  • Dimensions to your drawing
  • Grade direction matched to the load case
  • Surface condition as sintered ground or lapped
  • Part marking on request
  • Packing adapted to air or sea freight
Compared With Other Options
  • Versus hardened tool steel — far better wear resistance but more brittle so mounting matters
  • Versus other carbide in this range — see the related products below for the closest alternative form
  • Versus a fabricated assembly — a one piece carbide part removes joints and alignment work

Use Guide

Fitting and Service Guide

  • Check the seat is clean and undamaged before fitting. Uneven support is the most common cause of early failure.
  • Use even pressure. Never drive a carbide part into a holder by impact.
  • Follow the interference fit agreed on the drawing rather than adjusting the carbide.
  • Store parts separated and supported. Carbide chips carbide when parts knock together.
  • Log the run time achieved so replacement becomes planned maintenance.

FAQ

Carbide Sleeves FAQ

What is the largest sleeve you have produced?
A documented example is OD 268 mm x ID 228.6 mm x H 160 mm with 176 holes. Send your drawing and we will confirm whether your size is within what we can produce.
Can you machine a custom hole pattern?
Yes. Hole count diameter and pattern are machined to your drawing. Sleeves with 176 holes and with 82 holes have both been produced.
What bore tolerance can you hold?
Bore tolerance is agreed on the drawing before production. Tell us the fit you need against the mating shaft or insert.
