Carbide Rings

Tungsten Carbide Seal Rings and Wear Rings

Fully machined and grinding rings for mechanical seals and rolling wear positions

  • Stable seal face. A carbide face resists the scoring that starts a seal leak in abrasive or chemical service.
  • Ready to fit. Fully machined rings arrive with bore and faces ground to the drawing.
  • Or finish it yourself. Grinding rings are supplied with stock left on for shops with their own grinding capacity.

Product Overview

Overview

Tungsten carbide rings used as mechanical seal faces in petroleum and chemical duty and as wear rings in rolling and guiding positions. Rings are supplied fully machined with ground bore and side faces or as grinding rings for customers who finish in their own shop.

Application Scenarios

  • Mechanical seal faces for petroleum and chemical pumps
  • Wear rings and guide rings on rotating equipment
  • Rolling rings in wire and strip production

Problems It Solves

  • Seal faces in chemical and petroleum duty score and start to leak
  • Roll surfaces wear oval and the strip or wire loses dimensional control
  • Large diameter rings are difficult to source in one piece
Key Benefits

Why Customers Specify This Product

Stable seal face

A carbide face resists the scoring that starts a seal leak in abrasive or chemical service.

Ready to fit

Fully machined rings arrive with bore and faces ground to the drawing.

Or finish it yourself

Grinding rings are supplied with stock left on for shops with their own grinding capacity.

Large diameters

Large rings including keyed designs are produced and inspected in house.

Technical Features

Technical Features

  • Fully machined or grinding condition
  • Ground bore side faces and outside diameter
  • Keyways and drive features to drawing
  • Sinter-HIP densified body
Materials

Material and Grade

Cemented tungsten carbide consisting of tungsten carbide grain in a cobalt binder. Binder content and grain size are chosen against your load case because hardness and toughness move in opposite directions. Our engineers propose a direction and explain the trade off rather than quoting a grade code you cannot verify. See the grade guide.

How It Is Made

Manufacturing Process and Quality Control

Every part follows the same production route. Critical dimensions are agreed on the drawing so both sides measure the same thing.

1. Powder PreparationBall milling and spray drying to a uniform granulate
2. PressingBlank pressed with machining stock where required
3. Sinter-HIPDensified under isostatic pressure to reduce porosity
4. MachiningGrinding EDM and lapping to the approved drawing
5. InspectionCritical dimensions checked before packing
6. Export PackingProtected packing for air or sea freight
Certifications

Certificate copies and material documentation are supplied on request with your order. We do not publish certificate claims that we cannot show you so ask for exactly what your import or QA process requires and we will confirm what can be provided.

Customization Options
  • Dimensions to your drawing
  • Grade direction matched to the load case
  • Surface condition as sintered ground or lapped
  • Part marking on request
  • Packing adapted to air or sea freight
Compared With Other Options
  • Versus hardened tool steel — far better wear resistance but more brittle so mounting matters
  • Versus other carbide in this range — see the related products below for the closest alternative form
  • Versus a fabricated assembly — a one piece carbide part removes joints and alignment work

Use Guide

Fitting and Service Guide

  • Check the seat is clean and undamaged before fitting. Uneven support is the most common cause of early failure.
  • Use even pressure. Never drive a carbide part into a holder by impact.
  • Follow the interference fit agreed on the drawing rather than adjusting the carbide.
  • Store parts separated and supported. Carbide chips carbide when parts knock together.
  • Log the run time achieved so replacement becomes planned maintenance.

FAQ

Carbide Seal Rings FAQ

What is the difference between a grinding ring and a fully machined ring?
A grinding ring is supplied with stock left on for you to finish. A fully machined ring is ground to the final drawing dimensions and can be fitted directly.
Can you lap the seal face?
Tell us the flatness requirement for your seal. Faces are supplied ground as standard and lapping is arranged where the application needs it.
Do you produce large diameter rings?
Yes. Large machined rings including keyed designs are part of our normal production. Send the drawing and we will confirm the diameter.
