Glass Aerodynamic Profile Suspension Insulators LXAP-160 / U160A

160 kN Aerodynamic Glass Disc With a Self-Cleaning Shed

LXAP-160 / U160A is a 160 kN toughened glass disc on a 420 mm aerodynamic shed: wide, shallow and free of deep under-ribs, so wind carries deposit off the surface instead of trapping it. Creepage is 380 mm on a 155 mm spacing with a 20 mm coupling, and each unit weighs about 7.2 kg. It is the design used where line washing is impractical and natural cleaning has to do the work.

Key Benefits

  • Open aerodynamic shed lets wind clean the surface between rain events
  • 160 kN failing load with an 80 kN routine tension proof
  • 420 mm shed spreads the leakage path across an exposed surface
  • 20 mm ball and socket coupling for higher-load strings

Technical Features

  • 420 mm aerodynamic shed with no deep under-ribs
  • 155 mm spacing, 380 mm creepage
  • 60 kV dry and 50 kV wet power-frequency withstand voltage
  • 95 kV dry lightning impulse withstand voltage

Application Scenarios

  • Desert and coastal lines with steady prevailing wind
  • Remote routes where line washing crews cannot reach
  • Sites with fine airborne deposit and little rainfall

Who It Is For

  • Utilities operating remote transmission corridors
  • Project developers in desert and arid regions
  • Asset managers cutting scheduled washing costs

Problems It Solves

  • Deposit accumulating in the under-ribs of fog profile discs
  • Washing programmes that are impossible on inaccessible routes
  • Flashover risk that rises steadily through a dry season
Comparison

How This Design Differs From the Alternatives

Compared With U160BP / 155 fog profile

Same 160 kN rating and spacing, but a wide open shed with 380 mm creepage rather than a ribbed 320 mm shed with 550 mm; the aerodynamic unit trades nominal creepage for self-cleaning.

Compared With UG120B146/450D double umbrella

Both target contamination, but the aerodynamic profile relies on wind cleaning while the double umbrella relies on extra skirts.

Use Guide

Specifying and Installing This Unit

  • Choose the aerodynamic profile where wind is reliable and washing is not possible
  • Do not compare creepage figures directly with fog profiles; assess against your pollution performance criterion
  • Size the string against the 80 kN tension proof value
  • Verify tower window clearance for the 420 mm shed diameter
Questions Buyers Ask

Questions About This Product

Why is the creepage lower than a fog profile?

An aerodynamic shed has no deep under-ribs, so nominal creepage is shorter. The design works because the surface stays clean, which keeps the effective creepage close to the nominal figure instead of losing it to deposit.

Does the 420 mm shed affect tower clearance?

It can. Check the shed diameter against the tower window and the swing envelope before you specify it, especially on compact designs.

Is this suitable for coastal salt?

It is used in coastal and desert service where wind is steady. Where salt is heavy and wind is low, a fog or double umbrella profile is usually the safer choice.

What is the mechanical rating?

160 kN mechanical failing load with an 80 kN routine tension proof applied to every unit in production.

Can you supply this with a 16 mm coupling?

The catalogued design uses a 20 mm coupling to match the 160 kN rating. Send your hardware requirement and we will confirm what can be supplied.
