SPC and LVT can carry the same wood decor and look identical in a photograph. They behave differently on a real substrate: SPC is rigid and floats over minor unevenness, LVT is flexible and follows what is under it. Get that the wrong way round and the floor shows every defect in the screed.
Choosing Between SPC And LVT Flooring In 5 Steps
Measure the substrate first
The floor cannot hide what nobody measured.
An uneven substrate points at SPC, whose stone plastic core bridges small defects. A flat screed opens LVT back up.
Decide glue down or floating
This decides how the floor is repaired in five years.
SPC floats on a unilin click joint and lifts for rework. LVT glue down suits large commercial floors.
Match the wear layer to the traffic
Wear layer, not thickness, is what wears out.
LVT runs 0.07 to 0.7mm. Residential floors sit at the thin end, commercial and hospitality at the thick end.
Check the wet rooms
Water is where laminate and vinyl part company.
SPC's core does not absorb water, which is why it is used in kitchens, bathrooms and basements.
Then choose the plank size
Plank format changes the room more than the decor does.
LVT comes in 184x950mm, 152.4x914.4mm and 177.8x1219mm; SPC in 183mm and 230mm widths.
