How Ultrasonic Tank Level Measurement Works

Time-of-flight level sensing for water tanks, what affects the reading, and when a multi-channel console is the right shape.

Time of flight above the liquid

An ultrasonic level head sits in the top of the tank and sends a short burst of sound downward. It times the echo from the liquid surface and converts that to a distance. Because the head never touches the water, there is nothing in the tank to foul, corrode or clean — which is the main reason this technique won in water storage.

Empty distance, not level

What the sensor measures is the gap from the head to the surface. Level is derived by subtracting that from the tank height, which the installer sets up. Get the tank height wrong and every reading is wrong by a constant, so this single number deserves attention at commissioning.

What disturbs the echo

Foam, a strongly agitated surface, steep tank walls close to the beam, and inlet streams falling past the head all return confusing echoes. Mounting matters: away from the fill point, away from the wall, and square to the surface. Temperature changes the speed of sound, which is why a head that is baked in the afternoon sun can drift.

One tank or a row

A household cistern needs a single head and a display indoors. A farm or an estate with a row of tanks needs a console that carries 8 or 16 channels, so all of them are read in one place. Choosing the single-channel version and then adding tanks is the expensive path.

Why people buy it

Every ultrasonic level installation replaces the same thing: someone climbing a ladder with a torch. Once the level is on a display in the kitchen or the pump house, it gets checked daily instead of when something runs dry.
