How Universal Remote Code Libraries Work
Why one remote can replace a shelf of brand-specific parts, and what to check before it does.
A code library is a lookup table
An infrared remote sends a pattern of pulses. Each manufacturer, and often each production period within a manufacturer, uses its own pattern. A universal remote carries a library of those patterns - 5000 equipment codes in the case of our A998 - and sends the one that matches the receiver in front of it.
Intelligent search versus code entry
Older universal remotes required the user to look up a three or four digit code in a printed table. Intelligent search walks the library automatically and confirms with an indicator light, which removes the step most likely to end in a returned product.
Power-off memory is the difference between one setup and many
Without power-off memory, the code is lost every time the batteries are changed and the user has to set the remote up again. With it, the code survives the battery change. On a replacement remote sold through retail, this single feature drives most of the review difference between products.
