QC 3.0 and USB Power Delivery Explained for Buyers

What the two fast-charge standards actually change, and why a range usually needs both.

QC 3.0 and USB Power Delivery Explained for Buyers

Two ways to raise the voltage

A standard USB port delivers 5 V. Both fast-charge standards work by negotiating a higher voltage so that more power flows without a thicker cable. Quick Charge 3.0 steps the voltage in fine increments; USB Power Delivery negotiates fixed profiles over USB Type-C. Our DQ33F travel charger, for example, runs its Type-C port at 3.6-6.5 V, 6.5-9 V and 9-12 V at 3 A.

Why a range needs both

Devices in the field are split. A charger carrying only PD leaves older QC devices charging at 5 V; a charger carrying only QC leaves a modern laptop or phone slow. A single SKU that carries both, as our PD and QC3.0 charger does, avoids explaining the difference on the packaging.

Read the per-port figure, not the total

A multi-port charger quoting a large total output may de-rate hard when every port is loaded. Our smart dual USB ports are quoted at 5 V / 2.4 A with each port at 2.4 A maximum, which is the figure a buyer should be asking for.

No-load power is a compliance number

No-load power is what the adapter draws plugged in with nothing attached. At 0.1 W our platform sits well inside the thresholds that regional efficiency rules apply, which matters when a programme has to clear several markets.

Certification decides the launch date

The adapter platform is built to CB, UL, PSE, GS, SAA and KC. Because several housings share one certified power stage, adding a plug body for another market does not restart the approval cycle.

FAQ

Questions On This Guide

Can one adapter cover several output voltages?
Our 12 W wall-mounted platform is configurable at 3 V, 5 V, 9 V, 12 V, 15 V and 24 V DC, so a device family can be supported without a new certified platform for each voltage.
What input range do your adapters accept?
100 to 240 V AC at 50 to 60 Hz, with input current 0.15 A maximum.
