Designing Destination Souvenirs That Sell
The souvenir that sells is the one a visitor recognises as the place they just stood in. Everything else is a compromise on that.

Name the place, not the country
A visitor standing in Valparaiso buys Valparaiso. The country name is what a range falls back on when it has no local design, and in the location itself it always sells more slowly.
The commercial catch is allocation: a city design only sells in that city. One way around it is to put the city scene inside a national outline, so the same piece works on a city shelf and a national rack.
Build the rack across price points
A rack of designs at one price gives a customer nothing to trade up or down to. Vary construction rather than only subject: a flat two-plane design costs less to make than a layered three-plane scene, and that difference becomes your shelf price spread.
Five designs is a working minimum for a single destination. Eight to twelve fills a rack properly if a shop sells that destination exclusively.
Composition rules that survive moulding
- Keep lettering in its own band rather than across a detailed subject
- Give white or black subjects a mid-tone surround so they do not read as a hole
- Vary the size of adjacent colour masses so the eye knows where to start
- Brace open shapes such as hooks and rings with a second element
- Keep facial relief shallow so features do not sit in shadow
These are not aesthetic preferences. Each one comes from a design that failed for that specific reason.
Use a shared device across a range
A common element, an I-love construction, a postcard frame, a map outline, a shared base, is what makes separate designs read as a collection. Collections lift multi-buy rates and they let you add a design two years later without it looking out of place.
It costs nothing extra to plan. It is purely a decision taken before the drawings start.
Decide the retail format before production
Loose bin stock and carded peg stock are different businesses. Chains generally need barcoded, hang-ready product; independents usually prefer loose bins with a lower landed cost.
You can serve both from one tooling programme by splitting the decision at packing, but the carding artwork needs its own lead time, so it has to be raised at the start.

How Custom Soft PVC Fridge Magnets Are Made
A soft PVC magnet is not printed. It is moulded, colour by colour, in an aluminium tool, and almost every quality problem you can see in a finished magnet was decided before production started.
Soft PVC Versus Rubber and Silicone
Three materials cover almost everything in moulded promotional products. Choosing the wrong one usually shows up as a part that looks right and feels wrong.
Preparing Artwork Files for Custom Moulded Products
Most delays in a first order are artwork delays, and almost all of them are avoidable if you know what the factory actually needs.
Questions on This Topic
How many designs should a new destination rack start with?
Five as a minimum, eight to twelve to fill a rack. Start more designs at trial quantity rather than fewer designs at full quantity, then reorder what sells.
Is it worth doing city-specific designs?
Yes, where you control the allocation. If you supply many shops from one warehouse, put the city inside a national outline so the piece has two possible homes.
What is the most common design mistake?
Lettering placed across a detailed subject. It ruins both: the text becomes hard to read and the subject loses its shape.
