Bulk Packing Versus Blister Carding
The packing decision looks like a detail at the end of a project. It is actually a channel decision that has to be taken at the start.

The two formats
| Bulk bagged | Blister carded | |
|---|---|---|
| Best channel | Independents, bin display | Chains, peg racks |
| Barcode | Applied by retailer | Printed on your header card |
| Freight density | Higher, lower cost per piece | Lower, cards take space |
| Presentation | Customer handles product directly | Product stays clean and hang ready |
Neither is better. They serve different buyers, and the wrong one can cost you a listing.
Why chains usually insist on carding
Chain retail runs on scanning and on planograms. A loose magnet cannot be hung on a peg and cannot be scanned at the till without a separate label operation, which the store will not do.
If a chain listing is in your plan, budget for header cards from the start. Card artwork, barcode allocation and print lead time all have to fit inside the same schedule as the product.
Why independents often prefer bulk
A bin of loose magnets invites handling, and handling sells souvenirs. It also ships denser, so the landed cost per piece is lower.
The trade-off is presentation. White and pale products in particular look tired faster in a bin, which is worth considering when you pick which designs go loose.
Shape affects packing cost
Regular shapes such as squares and rectangles stack and bag more densely than irregular cut-outs, so you get more units per carton and lower freight per piece.
On a high-volume line that difference is real money. It is one reason a framed square design can be more profitable than a shaped one at the same shelf price.
Doing both from one production run
The split can be made at packing rather than at development. The same moulded product goes into bulk bags for independents and onto printed header cards for chains.
Send us the card artwork and your barcode and we print, fold and card here, so chain stock arrives retail ready and independent stock arrives at the lower landed cost.

How Custom Soft PVC Fridge Magnets Are Made
A soft PVC magnet is not printed. It is moulded, colour by colour, in an aluminium tool, and almost every quality problem you can see in a finished magnet was decided before production started.
Soft PVC Versus Rubber and Silicone
Three materials cover almost everything in moulded promotional products. Choosing the wrong one usually shows up as a part that looks right and feels wrong.
Preparing Artwork Files for Custom Moulded Products
Most delays in a first order are artwork delays, and almost all of them are avoidable if you know what the factory actually needs.
Questions on This Topic
Can you print our header cards?
Yes. Send the card artwork with your barcode and we print, fold and card the product here so it arrives retail ready.
Does carding add much to the unit cost?
It adds card, print and a packing operation, and it reduces freight density. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on whether your channel requires it.
Which products should not be bulk bagged?
Anything with delicate extensions, and pale or white products that show handling. We flag these at drawing stage and recommend carding where it matters.
