Product Overview

QK4200 is a liquid polyurea rheology additive for waterborne, dispersion and emulsion systems. Stirred into the coating it builds a three-dimensional network that gives strongly shear-thinning flow, so pigment stays in suspension and film build holds on vertical surfaces without flattening out the levelling. It works in water, water/glycol-ether and alcohol-solvent blends, and can be post-added to correct a batch that has already been let down.

Key Benefits

  • Shear-thinning network forms after stirring, so the coating stays brushable but recovers body at rest
  • Prevents pigment and filler settling in storage without a separate anti-settling paste
  • Holds film build on vertical surfaces at 0.5-2% without hurting flow and levelling
  • Post-addable, so an under-bodied batch can be corrected instead of reworked
  • Effective in water, water/glycol-ether and alcohol-solvent blends

Who It Is For

  • Industrial coating formulators moving solventborne recipes across to water
  • Paint plants that store filled stock for months before shipment
  • Toll manufacturers who need a post-addable viscosity lever on the filling line

Problems It Solves

  • Hard settling that will not redisperse with drum agitation
  • Runs and sags on vertical panels at the film build the specification asks for
  • Batch-to-batch viscosity drift that would otherwise mean reworking a full tank

Application Scenarios

  • Waterborne industrial topcoats sprayed on vertical steelwork
  • High-pigment-load primers that separate during long storage
  • Emulsion systems where a pre-gel paste would need extra grinding equipment
  • Correcting viscosity on a finished batch before filling

Technical Features

  • Chemistry is a modified polyurea solution, not a fumed silica or bentonite thickener
  • 50% non-volatile content, so a small addition carries a lot of active structure
  • Viscosity 300-1600 cps at 25C keeps it pumpable at ambient temperature
  • Moisture sensitive: slight haze during storage does not change the rheology effect

Recommended Dosage

All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.

Anti-settling0.2-1% on total formulation
Anti-sag0.5-2% on total formulation

Use Guide

  • Add under moderate shear so the additive mixes evenly and disperses quickly.
  • No special temperature control is needed. It can go in at the mill base stage or be post-added to adjust viscosity.
  • Allow 2-24 hours after mixing before judging the rheology; build-up depends on time and system polarity.
  • If a drier is used in the same formulation, watch for discoloration from metal complex formation and re-check the rheology.

Quality Control On Your Side

  • Typical values on the data sheet are indicative, not release specifications
  • Confirm the optimum addition level by a dosage ladder in your own system
  • Check yellowing at the top of the dosage range before locking a white or pastel formulation
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.

Fumed silicaComes ready as a liquid, so no high-shear pre-dispersion step and no dust handling.
Bentonite pre-gelNo separate pre-gel preparation and no water-to-clay ratio to control on the plant floor.
Associative polyurethane thickenerBuilds thixotropy for settling and sag control rather than lifting the whole viscosity curve.

Questions

QK4200 Liquid Rheological Agent Questions

Can QK4200 be added after the coating is finished?
Yes. It is designed to be post-addable. Add it under moderate shear and allow 2 to 24 hours before judging the result.
How long before the rheology can be evaluated?
Between 2 and 24 hours after mixing. The build-up rate depends on how long it has been standing and on the polarity of the system.
What packing sizes do you supply?
25 kg and 180 kg containers.
Does it affect levelling?
The source data sheet states that the network prevents settling and sagging without affecting flow and levelling at the recommended dosage.
