QK8521 Waterborne Aluminium Pigment Orientation Agent

VOC-free EVA wax emulsion that lays aluminium and pearl pigment flat in waterborne basecoats.

Positioned against BYK 8421

Product Overview

QK8521 is a rheology-modified wax emulsion based on modified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, supplied at 20% active in water with no VOC below 1500 ppm. It improves the orientation of effect pigments in waterborne coatings, cuts cloud patches and spotting, and is less sensitive to co-solvent than polyurethane thickeners. It arrives ready to use, so there is no bentonite pre-gel or acrylic thickener let-down to prepare.

Key Benefits

  • Lays effect pigment flat, reducing cloud patches and spotting
  • Less settling during storage and processing
  • Lower co-solvent sensitivity than polyurethane thickeners
  • Ready to use, unlike bentonite and acrylic thickeners that need preparation
  • No VOC below 1500 ppm, which keeps waterborne VOC budgets intact

Who It Is For

  • Automotive coating formulators working to a tight VOC limit
  • Industrial and wood coating plants running metallic shades
  • Producers of co-solvent-free effect pigment pastes

Problems It Solves

  • Cloudy or patchy metallic panels caused by pigment not lying flat
  • Effect pigment settling out of storage
  • Orientation additives that lose effect as co-solvent content rises

Application Scenarios

  • Waterborne automotive basecoat, the application the data sheet recommends first
  • Waterborne industrial metallic coatings
  • Wood and furniture coatings needing an even metallic effect
  • Leather finishes

Technical Features

  • Modified EVA copolymer wax, non-ionic, carried in water
  • Wax melting point 105C
  • Supply viscosity 500 mPa.s, pH 5.0-7.0
  • Acidic on addition, so system pH should be lifted to 9-9.5 first
  • Final viscosity must be read on a rotational viscometer, not a flow cup

Recommended Dosage

All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.

Use Guide

  • Add at a low shear rate after the effect pigment has been added. Do not pre-dilute with water.
  • Raise system pH to 9-9.5 before adding, because QK8521 is acidic and will pull the pH down. The higher the co-solvent content, the more pH headroom is needed.
  • Shake well before use and filter out any dried or hardened material.
  • Once opened, use the container up within a short period.
  • Read the final viscosity on a rotational viscometer such as a Brookfield, not a flow cup.

Quality Control On Your Side

  • Verify pH before and after addition on every batch
  • Filter before use to keep dried wax out of the line
  • Judge orientation on sprayed panels under controlled light
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.

Polyurethane thickenerHolds orientation better as co-solvent content rises.
BentoniteSupplied ready to use, with no pre-gel preparation.
Acrylic thickenerEasier to add and handle, and less settling in storage.

Questions

QK8521 Waterborne Aluminium Pigment Orientation Agent Questions

What pH should the system be at before adding QK8521?
Raise the system to pH 9 to 9.5 before addition. The product is acidic and will lower system pH, and formulations with more co-solvent need more headroom.
Can it be diluted with water first?
No. Add it undiluted at low shear after the effect pigment.
What is the shelf life?
Six months at room temperature in the unopened original package. Store and transport between 0 and 35C.
How should final viscosity be measured?
With a rotational viscometer such as a Brookfield. A flow cup will not give a usable reading on this system.
