QK8330 Waterborne Rheology Control Agent

Modified polyamide salt that orients effect pigments and stops settling in waterborne automotive and industrial coatings.

Positioned against DISPARLON 633E

Product Overview

QK8330 is a modified polyamide salt used to control the orientation and settling of effect pigments in waterborne coatings. It lifts the brightness of solvent-free effect pigment slurries and reduces mottling and cloud patches, while having far less impact on system viscosity than polyurethane or acrylic thickeners.

Key Benefits

  • Improves effect pigment orientation, so metallic and pearl panels read evenly
  • Reduces cloud patches, mottle and colour variation across a sprayed panel
  • Raises brightness of solvent-free effect pigment slurries
  • Very little effect on the viscosity of the coating compared with polyurethane and acrylic agents
  • Good thixotropy and settling resistance in both storage and application

Who It Is For

  • Automotive refinish and OEM coating formulators working in water
  • Producers of waterborne effect pigment concentrates
  • Industrial coating plants adding a metallic line

Problems It Solves

  • Mottling and cloudiness in waterborne metallic basecoats
  • Effect pigment settling in slurry during storage
  • Viscosity climbing out of the spray window when a conventional thickener is used to fix orientation

Application Scenarios

  • Waterborne automotive basecoats with aluminium or pearl pigment
  • Waterborne industrial coatings with a metallic finish
  • Solvent-free effect pigment slurries made for tinting

Technical Features

  • 20% non-volatile content in a propylene glycol methyl ether / water carrier
  • Slightly acidic product; account for it when balancing system pH
  • Temperature sensitive: must be stored and transported below 45C
  • Dispersion is assisted by amine already present, so no separate dissolution step is required

Recommended Dosage

All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.

On total formulation, as supplied1-5%

Use Guide

  • Amine present in the system helps QK8330 disperse directly, with no dissolution or polymer pre-treatment step.
  • Pre-blend water and QK8330 at a 4:1 ratio; the blend can be added at any stage.
  • Keep storage and transport below 45C.

Quality Control On Your Side

  • Check system pH after addition, since the product is slightly acidic
  • Assess orientation on sprayed panels rather than by viscosity alone
  • Confirm dosage with a ladder across the 1-5% range
Comparison

How It Compares With The Alternatives

Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.

Polyurethane thickenerImproves orientation with far less effect on the viscosity of the whole system.
Acrylic thickenerBetter thixotropy and settling resistance during storage and application.
QK8521QK8330 is a polyamide salt; QK8521 is an EVA wax emulsion. Both orient effect pigment in water, with different pH handling.

Questions

QK8330 Waterborne Rheology Control Agent Questions

What dosage should we start with?
1 to 5% on the total formulation, as supplied. Confirm with a ladder in your own system.
Does QK8330 need to be pre-dissolved?
No. Amine present in the system assists dispersion. Pre-blend with water at 4:1 and add at any stage.
What is the storage limit?
The product is temperature sensitive and must be stored and transported below 45C.
Is it acidic?
Yes, the product is slightly acidic. Allow for it when setting system pH.
