QK4100 Liquid Rheological Agent
Liquid polyurea thixotrope for solventborne and solvent-free coatings, PVC plastisol and air-drying resin systems.
Positioned against BYK 410
Product Overview
QK4100 is the solventborne counterpart to QK4200. It is a liquid modified polyurea that builds a strong thixotropic structure in solvent-type and solvent-free systems, and it also works in PVC plastisol and natural-curing resin systems. The result is better anti-settling and anti-sag without a pre-gel step, and it can be post-added.
Key Benefits
- Builds a high thixotropic effect in solventborne and solvent-free formulations
- Works in PVC plastisol, where it also improves processing efficiency
- Reduces the floating tendency of pigmented plastisols
- Post-addable for viscosity correction on finished batches
- Improves sag resistance without flattening the flow of the film

Who It Is For
- Formulators of solventborne industrial and protective coatings
- PVC plastisol compounders looking for better thixotropy and less colour float
- Plants running both solventborne and waterborne lines that want one additive family
Problems It Solves
- Pigment settling in solventborne systems during long storage
- Sagging on vertical surfaces at high film build
- Colour floating in pigmented plastisol
Application Scenarios
- Solventborne anti-corrosive primers stored in drums for long periods
- PVC plastisol for coil and underbody applications
- Air-drying alkyd systems that settle in the can
- Solvent-free formulations where water-based thickeners cannot be used
Technical Features
- Modified polyurea solution supplied at 50% non-volatile content
- Lower supply viscosity than QK4200 at 200-700 cps (25C)
- Recommended for systems of moderate polarity
- Moisture sensitive; storage haze does not affect performance

Recommended Dosage
All dispersant and additive dosage figures below are quoted exactly as the source data sheet quotes them. Dispersant figures are percentages on pigment weight, not on the total batch. The published values are empirical, so confirm the optimum with a dosage ladder in your own system.
| PVC, anti-settling and anti-float | 0.2-0.5% on resin, as supplied |
| PVC, sag control | 0.5-1% on resin, as supplied |
Use Guide
- Add under medium shear to get even mixing and fast dispersion. No special temperature control is required.
- Can be added at the mill base stage or post-added to adjust viscosity.
- Evaluate the rheology 2 to 4 hours after mixing.
- Test storage stability first when using it in reactive, catalysed or nitrocellulose systems.
- Watch for discoloration if a drier is present, and for yellowing if the dosage is pushed too high.
Quality Control On Your Side
- Run a dosage ladder before fixing the level; published figures are empirical
- Check storage stability separately for reactive and nitrocellulose systems
- Verify colour on white and pastel shades at the top of the dosage range
How It Compares With The Alternatives
Technical comparison against other ways of solving the same problem. Nothing here is a performance claim against a named commercial product.
| QK4200 | QK4100 is for solventborne, solvent-free and plastisol systems; QK4200 covers waterborne and water/glycol-ether systems. |
| Fumed silica | Liquid supply form removes the high-shear pre-dispersion and the dust handling. |
| Castor oil derivatives | Does not require the temperature window that wax and castor derivatives need to develop structure. |
