Standard Profile

Cap And Pin Type Standard Profile Toughened Glass Insulator U40B

A 40 kN standard profile disc with 110 mm spacing, 175 mm diameter and 190 mm creepage, weighing 1.8 kg. The lightest unit in our range and the usual choice for distribution and sub-transmission lines in clean air.

40 kN Creepage 190 mm Spacing 110 mm Ø 175 mm Coupling 11 1.8 kg
Problems It Solves

Why Line Engineers Specify The U40B

  • Porcelain discs on the same line need live testing to find punctured units, which is slow and needs outages
  • Heavier discs raise conductor tension and tower loading on lines that never see real pollution
  • Hidden defects in untempered material appear only after energisation
Key Benefits

What You Get In Return

  • 1.8 kg per disc keeps string weight and tower loading down on long distribution runs
  • 175 mm diameter reduces wind load compared with any transmission-class disc
  • 11 ball and socket coupling matches standard distribution fittings
  • Self-destructing glass makes a defective unit visible from a ground patrol

  • Distributors stocking a fast-moving entry rating
Comparison

How It Compares

Against the U70BS in the same profile family the U40B gives up 30 kN of mechanical rating and 130 mm of creepage, and returns half the weight and 80 mm less diameter. Choose it when the line is mechanically light and the air is clean.

Application Scenarios

Where The U40B Is Installed

10 kV to 66 kV distribution and sub-transmission suspension strings

Clean-air rural corridors with light atmospheric deposit

Reconstruction and temporary line work where handling weight matters

Manufacturing And Quality Control

The Four Stages That Decide Whether This Disc Reaches Your Tower

Toughening sets the mechanical rating, the thermal shock test removes defective shells, cementing fixes the fittings, and every finished unit is tested before it is packed.

5

Toughening And Tempering

Shells are heated close to the softening point, then high-pressure air jets cool the surface rapidly while the core cools slowly. The surface ends in compression at roughly 100 to 200 MPa with the core in tension, giving four to five times the mechanical strength of ordinary glass.

6

Thermal Shock Test

Shells are heated to about 300 degrees C and plunged into cold water, a drop of roughly 420 degrees C. Any unit carrying internal stress or an inclusion shatters here rather than in service. Survivors move on and the broken glass is recycled as cullet. A second thermal shock test follows to IEC 60383-1 and GB/T 1001.1.

Metal Fitting Assembly And Cementing

A hot-dip galvanized steel cap, steel pin and zinc sleeve are bonded to the toughened disc with high-strength alumina cement, then cured in a 70 degrees C water bath for about an hour so the cement develops full strength before handling.

Final Inspection And Testing

Every finished insulator is checked visually for cracks, bubbles, chips and bonding defects, then tested electrically for high-voltage withstand, insulation resistance and partial discharge, mechanically for tensile, bending and torsion strength, and environmentally for thermal cycling, pollution resistance and UV ageing.

Use Guide

Installing And Maintaining The U40B

Assemble the string with the matching ball and socket coupling size 11 and confirm that the security clip is fully seated on every unit before the string is lifted.

In service, inspect visually on routine patrols. A self-destructed disc is visible from the ground and the steel cap and pin continue to carry mechanical load until replacement. Clean in heavily polluted areas and replace broken units in the next planned outage. No complicated preventive tests are required.

We supply installation manuals, technical drawings and, for large projects, on-site installation guidance and string assembly training.

Answers

U40B Questions

What is the mechanical failing load of the U40B?

40 kN, with a net weight of 1.8 kg and 11 ball and socket coupling.

What creepage distance does the U40B provide?

190 mm, with 110 mm spacing and a 175 mm disc diameter.

Which voltage levels is the U40B typically used on?

Distribution and sub-transmission suspension strings. Its withstand figures are 32 kV wet and 50 kV dry power frequency, 70 kV dry lightning impulse and 110 kV puncture.

Is the U40B suitable for polluted areas?

Not as supplied. At 190 mm creepage it is intended for clean and mild pollution. For polluted routes use the anti-fog U70BLP or an alternating profile.
