Overmoulded Or Taped Breakouts On Harness Assemblies

Where a taped loom is the right answer, where it lets water in, and what overmoulding changes.

The Breakout Is The Weak Point

A harness rarely fails in the middle of a cable run. It fails where the bundle splits, where the conductors enter a connector, and where the assembly is handled. Those are the three places a taped loom offers the least protection.

Where Taped Looms Are Fine

Inside a dry cabinet, in a fixed installation, with no handling after commissioning, tape and braid are adequate and cheaper. Most control cabinet wiring never needs more than that.

Where Overmoulding Earns Its Cost

Underbody vehicle routing, outdoor equipment, wash down environments and anything a user plugs and unplugs daily. Overmoulding seals the breakout, fixes the geometry so the strain relief works, and survives stone impact and repeated handling. Our cable overmoulding solutions support industrial waterproofing projects for over 30 clients each year.

Tooling Is Part Of The Decision

An overmould needs a tool made to the breakout geometry, which is why it belongs to a production part rather than a one off. We design and manufacture the moulds in house, so the tooling follows your drawing rather than forcing your geometry to fit an existing tool.

Proving The Seal

Sealing is verified, not assumed. The ingress protection rating test evaluates dust and water resistance on the finished connector assembly, and terminal retention testing confirms the crimp underneath survived the moulding process.

Questions On This Topic

Can you overmould our existing connectors?

Yes, provided the connector bodies suit overmoulding. Send the parts for review.

Do you make the moulds yourselves?

Yes. Our engineering team custom designs and manufactures moulds and rubber connectors in house.
