Choosing Between UL2464 UL2514 And UL1007 Cable

Three cable constructions that cover most harness work, and how to tell which one your application needs.

UL2464 For Multi Core Equipment Wiring

UL2464 is the jacketed multi core construction we use on sealed circular assemblies, control looms and OBD diagnostic harnesses. The outer jacket protects the cores where the cable is handled, routed through panels or plugged repeatedly.

UL2514 For Dense Control Wiring

UL2514 appears on high circuit count control cables, such as 36 circuit JAE assemblies at 24AWG. When the circuit count is high and the current per circuit is low, this construction keeps the bundle manageable inside a cabinet.

UL1007 For Board Level Power

UL1007 single conductors are used on 3.96mm pitch assemblies in the Molex KK 396 and JST XH families, carrying 22AWG to 18AWG at 300V. Wide pitch housings exist precisely so heavier conductors can be terminated, and the cable choice has to match.

Gauge Follows Current Not Habit

Conductor gauge should come from the current per circuit and the acceptable voltage drop over the finished length. On a long DC run, such as a 6m solar extension, the gauge decision dominates everything else, which is why those builds use 10AWG rather than the 16AWG that fits the connector.

Tell Us The Current Not The Gauge

If you send the current per circuit and the finished length, we select the gauge and confirm it on the sample. Specifying a gauge copied from an older drawing is the most common reason a harness runs hot in service.

Questions On This Topic

Can you supply shielded constructions?

Send the noise requirement and we quote a shielded build on the sample run.

Which cable do you use by default?

It depends on the build. UL2464 and UL2514 cover most control and equipment work, with UL1007 on 3.96mm pitch power assemblies.
